TOLIRE LAKE, TERNATE, NORTH MALUKU

Tolire lake, located in Ternate lain street precisely about 14 km from the center of Ternate, North Maluku province. There are two Tolire lakes witch is small Tolire and great Tolire. The distance between them to about 200 meters but if through the street about 800 meters.

Small Tolire located close to the sea / beach is only about 15 m from the shoreline. While the Great Tolire located rather in the hills at the foot of Mount Gamalama.

There are several versions of the formation of the lake Tolire. One version is the lake formed from a large eruption in 1775 that made the ground collapsed and formed Tolire. Another version is that the lake was formed due to the curse of the Almighty who drowned village as a father have intercourse with her son after the village feasting and drunkenness. Great Tolire is Places  the village while  small Tolire  is places female children who fled in drowned.

Regardless of the legend great Tolire  lake has a very beautiful view. lake of about 530 m in diameter is surrounded by cliffs with a height of about 30 to 100 m. Gamalama stands proudly into the background great Tolire that displaced over the more beautiful scenery. Great Tolire lakes water greenish. On top of a great Tolire lake seen several birds such as eagle circling.

There are many myths about the great Tolire lake. Among these is the presence of a giant white crocodile that inhabits the lake so that residents do not dare to take the fish in the lake. The myth says that the giant white crocodile rarely seen and anyone who saw the white will have good luck. The author himself visited the great Tolire lake  two times in two different days  and both saw the appearance of a crocodile in the lake. But instead of a giant white crocodile like myth, but only ordinary crocodile colored to brown.

Another myth is that if we throw a stone from the top of the cliff, then the stone will never get to touch the water as if there is a force that pulls the stone. Near the cliff there that sells stone for Rp 2,000 for a few pieces of stone. Observation of the author there are two people who tried to throw stones. Throws the first does not appear to touch the water, but the second person throw though not visible to touch the water, but the sound of water splashing sound clear when the stone touches the surface of the water. Perhaps because it is too far away and blocked by the cliffs until no visible stone touch the water.

Facilities available at great Tolire lot  parking space. There are also food stalls and souvenir vendors. Other facilities are Mushalah and toilet. To get into the big Tolire lake is free of charge.
