Ellis Island was the gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States, which serves as the busiest immigrant inspection station in the country from 1892 to 1954. The island is being developed through the reclamation of land between 1892 and 1934. Previously, some genuine small island is home to the Fort Gibson and a marine magazine. The island became part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965, and since 1990 the island has a museum of immigration run by the National Park Service. United States Supreme Court decision in 1998 stated that the majority of the island is part of New Jersey.

Most of the immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island, allowed into the United States. However, there was little that was rejected and sent back to their country. Those suffering from infectious disease, mad, or that the suspect as criminals !. They are of course very sad. Many of them were crying. They had sailed away to cross the ocean from their home country. Their labor be in vain. That is why, Ellis Island earned the nickname Island of Tears, or Broken Heart Island.

After World War II, America established the American embassies in many countries. Anyone who wants to come to America, can take care of the permit at the US embassy in each country. So, no need to go far away to come to Ellis Island. In 1954, Ellis Island was closed. Building the immigration office at Ellis Island reopened to the public. However, the immigration office used as the Ellis Island Immigration Museum.
Sandy storm that occurred on October 29, 2012 led to a flood as high as 2.4 meters at Ellis Island cause damage to the heating and electrical systems of the museum.

US National Parks Board said the museum was now repaired and will most likely still be closed this year.
Although the collection of the museum was not damaged in the storm, but more than 1 million items of forcibly displaced due to the lack of electricity means not possible to create an ideal environment for the collection
