three years ago the author has made an excursion to the crater of Mount Papandayan. In December 2014 the writer returned a visit to Mount Papandayan. If the last visit to the writer just visited the crater of Mount Papandayan, then on a visit this time climbing done up to field Tegal Alun Edelweiss.
The trip from Jakarta on December 26, 2014 at 7: 30 with my wife and three sons and daughters of we. Because travel is Friday, arrived in the village targeted Cisurupan located on the slopes papandayan before 12 noon and did Jumatan there. However, these targets are missed due to jams occurs along the highway Jakarta - Bandung. Usually until the exit Cileunyi in about 1.5 hours, but this time to within 3.5 hours. Finally, we do worship Friday prayers at the mosque before the city of Garut.
Parking Area / Camp David
Finally we arrived at the parking area of the mountain papandayan or often called Camp David around at 13:30. The road to the parking area of Cisurupan current conditions are much better than three years ago at which time it was badly damaged road conditions. Improvements have been made in October 2014. This is because of the many complaints from visitors / climbers which time August 17, 2014 there were approximately 30,000 visitors to the mountain papandayan.
Photos parking area of Mount Papandayan
Parking area is located at an altitude of 2009 m above sea level (asl). After preparation then we all started to make the climb to the crater Papandayan. Because it was raining quite big so we wear a raincoat and carrying an umbrella. Do not forget to bring a mask and photo equipment. Even though it wearing a raincoat umbrella is also necessary to protect the camera when shooting in heavy rain conditions. and can also be used as a stick to climb.
In the parking area, visitors to register / report at ports of entry. We charged Rp 53,000 for five people and one vehicle. Do not forget a good store to sign the report will be returned when the back.
Conditions parking area compared to three years ago the number of kiosks and also supporting facilities more. There are four pieces of toilet facilities, 2 of which can be used to defecate. There are also facilities Mushalah, unfortunately when it taps for ablution not remove the water, so it should be ablution in the toilet. There is also a heated swimming pool where the water is murky green color. Unfortunately, besides the water is turbid also place less well maintained so that visitors are reluctant to swim in the pool. Kiosks selling merchants, food, souvenirs and some climbing equipment such as masks, raincoats and others.
crater Papandayan
The road to the crater papandayan relatively open past traking rocks. Papandayan crater altitude of about 2170 m above sea level. takes about 1 hour. Because Papandayan mountain is an active mountain, then there is a crater papandayan many holes with whitish smoke belching hiss loud enough. This smoke contains sulfur that will sting if exposed to the eyes and sore lungs if inhaled. We recommend that you wear a mask and not too long in an area that a lot of smoke.
The scenery around the crater papandayan truly extraordinary. From there look expanse of white clouds under us. The author calls it the land above the clouds. Rocks were exposed to bursts of color to yellow sulfur fumes. This may cause the crater papandayan often also called crater Mas. From the poss Papandayan crater is actually we plan to continue to Papandayan crater lake, but because it was already too late afternoon before sunset, then we abort the plan. In the crater Papandayan Indosat and XL signal can be received, for other operators we did not get a check. Unfortunately for data communication / internet is very slow. While at Camp David at all no signal
Camping at Camp David
Once satisfied to take pictures we returned to Camp David and camping there, next mushalah. Beware of many small caterpillars there. temperature at camp david was very cold. Pads tents already given tarpaulins, tents double decks as well as in a tent lined with more mat, but the cold still translucent back, even though the author had put on socks, skullcaps and jacket during sleep. After the prayer rugs and mats plus added another new glove cold from the ground somewhat reduced. Surprisingly, children can be asleep at that time. Maybe you need to bring a sleeping bag if you want to camp there. The author himself mebawa only one piece sleeping bag that functioned as a blanket for children.
Morning after morning prayers, breakfast, unloading tents and packing finally we started climbing 07:08 hours. To climb this time because the journey is quite heavy and far, then my wife did not come and wait at camp david. To make the climb do not forget to bring food and drink enough and replacement clothing and jackets are packed in large plastic (preferably double plastic) from getting wet when heavy rain conditions. Do not forget to also raincoat and umbrella photo tool. Maps and GPS are also required. Smartphones can be used here as a camera, GPS, compass, flashlight, image maps, also a means of communication. You can use the interactive map below to help you climb, this interactive map can be enlarged and reduced as needed, also equipped with the location name, coordinates and altitude Each location,

Climbing papandayan Pos 1 (crater Papandayan) to Pos 2 (Gober Hut)
Hiking trail back through the crater papandayan. In the post Papandayan crater (Post 1), there are several stalls selling snacks. From the here the climb continues to Post Gober Hut or Lawang Angin. Travel to Post Gober Hut of the crater papandayan first terrain is down the cobblestone streets with open terrain. Further down the forest to the river. After crossing a small river way back up through the forest. Out of the jungle terrain through the streets of stone the size of a two car wide enough to post Gober Hut.
From the Post 1 to Post 2 in fact there was formerly a lighter path without having to go down to the river, but the line was cut off by landslides. On the map red lines short. In addition, from Post 1 can also directly to the Hutan Mati without going through Post 1 and Pondok Saladah. (on the map marked red lines long) But this path is also closed due to dangerous and prone to landslides. There was also no registration post after Hutan Mati.
Photos track of Mount Papandayan Post 1 - Post 2
From the Post 1 to Post 2 starts to rain drizzle. For protection against the rain we wore raincoats upper part only.

Post 2 (Gober Hut)
Post Gober Hut located at an altitude of 2290 m above sea level. At this location there is one post registration if you want to continue traveling or camping. There are also three houses at the same time food kiosks and toilets and mushalah. If you intend to add provisions or eat better in this post. Because the price here is cheaper than in the stall Pondok Saladah.
Photos stone path to Post Gober Hut
In the second Post, there are some climbers who camped here.
Farthest stall holders at the of Pondok Saladah is very friendly and very helpful to us. At the time of doing the climb back after we were all shivering conditions for the remains to make the climb and descend back to the water conditions of heavy rain translucent raincoat and clothes that we wear wet all. In this stall we cleanse ourselves beside contained shower stall. We were also given permission to warm themselves in the fireplace in the stalls, enjoy hot tea and fried rice. we also changed into dry clothes we carry in a backpack at the kiosk. Which makes we thrilled is the stall owners will not accept a tip from us. We just pay what we eat and drink alone. Thank you so much, we say to the owner of the stall may Allah SWT give multiplier rewarded. amen.
Before continuing we the climb to add provisions herein by buying and keeping a bottle of aqua.
Pondok Saladah
The next trip to the Pondok to Saladah rain began rather large so we wore raincoats complete top and bottom. Post 2 to the Pondok Saladah all through the woods with a dirt road conditions.
In the Pondok there Saladah toilet facilities, and several kiosks. In the Pondok Saladah have started to grow trees edelweiss but not too much. When we arrived very crowded conditions Pondok Saladah. There are dozens of tents set up there.
We did not stop long in the Pondok Saladah and move on to the Hutan Mati. In the Pondok Saladah there is no clear indication way into Hutan Mati. There are directions but must pass through a muddy river. We chose to turning and through the woods. In the forest there are several roads diverged before selecting the branch we decided to wait it out climbers who had come down from the top. Because it happened many climbers who have gone down then can we ask the right path and can continue the journey.
there is A fork in the road when we are a long wait but no climber who comming down. Incidentally, there are two men who shared we climbers. One is to try one of the branches of the road and we were kept waiting at the bottom. Not long after the climber back to our place and reported that the condition of the road in front of the course is very tight and many rare trees such as skipped and there are moaning tiger. Finally we continue the trip by choosing another path branches that it is true and we met some climbers coming down from above.
By the time the children eat at camp david given by the info kiosk owner in Tegal Alun that there are tigers and it delivered the children to the author. However, the authors reassurance children that kind of tiger that there is usually a kind of tiger or leopard panther relatively small size. And usually they are afraid of humans, especially if the number of people a lot.
Hutan Mati (death forest)
Finally we arrived at Hutan Mati but we left behind by two climbers earlier, advised for children's first experience of climbing while the author himself almost into a half-century, so it can not gassed fast deh. In the Hutan Mati we met a climbers heading to the Pondok Saladah but seems to take a shortcut route was closed.
Conditions in Hutan mati many dead trees that live stems and branches without leaves. May die because of the eruption of the volcano erupting at the time. The road condition is composed of limestone rocks were soft and slippery due to the rain started pouring. In a lot of branches dead forest roads and all its branches a lot of footprints of the climbers, very confusing to us,
We stopped for a long time here and was hesitant to proceed. Orientation GPS with maps that us prepared earlier also less helpful as us prepare maps are less accurate. While navigation with google maps can not be done because there is no signal and if there are a very slow internet. Finally us decided if to 12 noon no climber who down or rose to asked then us will back down.
photo Hutan mati
Lucky before 12 noon there are some climbers who down and could be asked directions to Tegal Alun. From the the new climbers us know that despite the many branches of the road in Hutan mati, but the way to Tegal Alun has many marked with rope Rafiah or bottle tied to a tree or even duct tape that was stuck in the branches of a tree.
With the provision of the information us finally dared to continue the journey. During a trip to Tegal Alun turns out us met many climbers coming down or going up that overtaking us. Conditions heavy rains become heavy and slippery terrain. Footpath turns into drains. Several times us slipped fell because the slippery road.
Tegal Alun
At about 12:30 pm we finally arrived at Tegal Alun. Tegal Alun is a broad valley plains around 1/2 km2 covered by the expanse of the edelweiss plant. There are several climbers who set up camp here, although there is an inscription in Pondok Saladah ban on camping in Tegal Alun.
After enjoying panoramic tegal Alun and take pictures we down back. We did not intend to peak because we not interest in going to the summit. For authors appeal Papandayan mountain peak is less interesting so we decided to go back down to camp david.
Challenges trip down was not inferior to climb. If the current uphill challenge is about to run out of breath by the time it comes down to is a slippery road that makes we repeatedly slipped fell and a chill that began to pierce the bone. At the time we started down clothes wet conditions because it turns translucent raincoat by heavy rains. Trip we did also not be fast because the first child's condition at the time of slip fall sprain. Slow journey made relative body condition not give off heat or sweat plus wet clothes make we shiver.
By the time we approached the Pondok Saladah tried a shortcut through the muddy swamp. Turns out we were wrong choice and incident of my youngest son lost his shoes in the mud swallow deep enough. Here we ceased to while trying to find footwear, but did not succeed. This condition makes we increasingly cold.
At first we were planning to get cleaned up and dressed in Pondok Saladah. But it turns out the conditions in Pondok Saladah very crowded. A long line in the toilet. Finally, we are here to clean themselves modest by using our mineral water supplies. After buying some mineral water and sandals we immediately proceeded to Gober Hut.
we stop In this post Gober Hut, clean up, change clothes dry and enjoy a meal of fried rice as we wrote above. After changing clothes and fill our stomachs much better condition and no longer shivering. Then we continue the journey to Camp David. Due to the condition of children who sprained then our trip was very slow. We arrived at Camp David at around 6pm. It seems we were last group arrived at camp david from papandayan mountain.
Which makes writers happy is the fact kids do not give up for mountaineering and willing if the invite to go up the mountain again.
