Kakaban island is an uninhabited island. There are only guards at the entrance gate. The main attraction of the Kakaban island is the lake Kakaban in the middle of the island. This kakaban brackish water lake has a size of approximately 2.6 x 1.5 kilometers and is inhabited by millions of jellyfish. The results of the process are complicated and lengthy evolution for thousands of years led to this jellyfish sting lost ability. In addition to the jellyfish lake Kakaban also inhabited by the algae into the carpet at the bottom of the lake, white anemones and jellyfish prey, fish, and other endemic biota. There are only two kinds of brackish water lake in the world, namely Lake Kakaban in Derawan Islands and Jellyfish Lake in Palau, Micronesia in the southeast region of the Pacific.

The way to the island Kakaban
Although the island is a tourist area Kakaban very beautiful and amazing, but it takes great effort and expense to get there. Even for residents east Kalimantan though. This is because the location is quite far from the island of Borneo, and is currently only accessible by sea.
The closest point on the island of Borneo is the city or port of Tanjung Batu located in Berau district of East Kalimantan province. From Tanjung Batu to Maratua island reached by a small speadboat capacity of 4-6 people in a time of 1.5 hours. Author hire spead boat to the island one day tour of Tanjung batu - Maratua Island - Kakaban Island - Sangalaki Island - Pulau Derawan back to Tanjung Batu at a cost of Rp 1.8 million. from island Maratua to island Kakaban in takes about 20 minutes by speed boat.
These costs through a fairly rigorous process negotiable, knowing the normal cost for the service Rp 2.5 million. Nego trick is not done at the port but in the parking lot. Besides that day happened to be quiet weekday travelers. In the parking lot there are few houses on stilts that stands on the edge of the sea. In the house there are several spead boat leaning. At that time the author negotiate with speed boat driver named brother Yan. Unfortunately the author forgot to record his mobile phone number.

To go to Tanjung Batu can be done by traveling overland from Tanjung Redeb city which is the capital of the district of Berau. Tanjung Redeb - Tanjung Batu takes about 2 hours. There is no public transport from Tanjung Redeb to Tanjung Batu. So you have to rent a car or using a travel. Travel costs around Rp 100,000 s / d Rp 150,000 per person.

To go to Tanjung Redeb can be traveled by using a landline or air. For landline very exhausting and time given the remoteness of Balikpapan. Estimated approximately 24 hours of the time it takes from Balikpapan to Tanjung Redeb via landline.

Another route to the island is via Tarakan Kakaban by sea. However, this route is much longer than the distance of the Tanjung batu - Kakaban Island so that the cost for the boat speed will be much more expensive.

Currently in Maratua being built aircraft runway. The future is expected to be an alternative transport to the island Maratua.
