Lawang Sewu, Semarang is located at Jalan Pemuda, Pendrikan Kidul village, district Central Semarang, Semarang, Central Java Province. Lawang Sewu is located in front of Tugu Muda Semarang.

Lawang Sewu, Semarang is a Dutch heritage building built in 1904. Lawang Sewu is derived from the Javanese word which means door Thousand. (Lawang = door, Sewu = thousand). So called because of the large number of existing doors and also the size of the large windows that resembles the door. However the actual number does not reach a thousand.



Lawang Sewu, Semarang was once the office of the Dutch railway company. Ancient buildings and magnificent two-story after independence used as offices Djawatan Repoeblik Indonesian Railways (DKARI) or now PT Kereta Api Indonesia. Lawang Sewu also been used as the Office of National Infrastructures Regional Military Command (military command IV / Diponegoro) Regional Office (Regional Office) Ministry of Transportation Central Java. In the struggle for this building has a history of its own that is when the event took place at the Battle of Semarang five days (October 14 to October 19 1945). The old building was the site of a great battle between youth AMKA or Force Young Railway against Kempetai and Kidobutai, Japan. Thus the Semarang City Government Mayor Decree Number. 650/50/1992, enter Lawang Sewu as one of 102 ancient or historic buildings in the city of Semarang that should be protected.
Currently, the old building has undergone a phase of conservation and revitalization undertaken by Conservation Unit objects and historic buildings PT Kereta Api Persero
