The Sacramento Southern Railroad Walnut Grove Branch has the right -of- way that extends south from Sacramento along the east bank of the Sacramento River. CSRRM hope to one day have a line longer trip, perhaps as far as Hood, California. The museum has 21 restored locomotives and train carriages, some dating back to 1862. The "Sierra Scene" shows a large-scale mockup construction scene high in the Sierra Nevada represents Donner Pass around 1867, featuring locomotives Governor Stanford. Another exhibition shows how the influence of railroads change American society, affecting travel, trade and everyday life, and the lives of railroaders and diversity of the people who worked on the railroad. Changing exhibits featuring photography, ephemera, and artifacts from the museum's collection, adding depth information related to the overall story and the history of trains. The museum has an extensive education program for elementary school students from across the region to help them learn about the history of trains using re-enactments, costumed docents, and includes train and handcar rides.
Adjacent to the main museum building is a reconstruction of the Central Pacific Railroad station in 1870 - the era of passenger and goods depot on Front Street, which houses historic railway equipment and contemporary. In early 2011, the interior remains closed to the public, but occasionally open for special events. During the summer, the Sacramento Southern Railroad, operated by the museum, taking passengers in 40 minutes, 6 - a mile (9.7 km) round-trip route along the Sacramento River at Walnut Grove branch portion of the former Southern Pacific Railroad.
